There is often so much criticism heaped on women who choose to have cosmetic surgery on their faces – but perhaps it’s time to get a fresh perspective on the issue?
The usual comments are that they’re doing it to please a man, or to conform to one or other of society’s stereotypes. But according to a feature article in the Telegraph newspaper online, we really are ‘doing it for ourselves’. Click here to view the full article.
In the interview with Dr Bryan Mendelson, it soon makes it clear that all the preconceptions about why women choose cosmetic surgery (and of course, other treatments) to improve their looks are mainly the result of society jumping to conclusions.
Dr Mendelson reports how 99.9% of his patients who are having plastic surgery on the faces have hidden the fact from people such as their husbands and children and have mostly made the decision without consulting their loved ones.
This leads others to wonder whether these women are ashamed, but Dr Mendelson says:
“People have surgery not to impress others, they do it to impress themselves…For many people, it’s about getting their confidence back…The fact is it’s about self-esteem. They’re doing it for themselves.”
At Aesthetics of Essex we understand that women come to us for many different reasons, and we respect them for that and support their viewpoint, whatever it should be. But we do strongly believe that no-one should feel ashamed or embarrassed about wanting to improve their looks, to be the best they can be.
