What Are Lipomas?

Lipomas are a benign skin lesion: soft, non-cancerous lumps made up of fat cells that sit just beneath the skin. They’re almost always harmless and can range in size from a small pea to several centimetres across, most commonly found on the back, shoulders, upper arms, neck and thighs. Large lipomas are less common, but are removed using the same straightforward technique.

In most cases, a lipoma develops on its own with no obvious cause. Rarer inherited conditions such as familial multiple lipomatosis can lead to several lipomas developing at once, which is something we’d talk through with you at your consultation.

Lipoma removal

What to expect at your lipoma removal appointment

  • We remove them using surgical excision: a local anaesthetic numbs the area first, so you may only feel a slight sting as it’s injected.
  • Then a small incision is made over the lipoma so it can be carefully removed, before the skin is closed with stitches and dressed.
  • Most lipoma removals are completed in one session within an hour, and you can go home the same day.

Because a lipoma is harmless, you don’t have to have it removed, and can live perfectly happily with one if you’d rather not. But if it’s affecting your confidence or getting in the way, this straightforward procedure can be completed in as little as an hour. If what you’re dealing with turns out to be a cyst or a mole rather than a lipoma, we can help with those too. You’ll always have a free, no-obligation consultation first, so we can talk through what’s right for you before any treatment goes ahead.

During your free consultation, we’ll carry out a physical examination to reach an accurate diagnosis and confirm lipoma removal is the right treatment for you; this is also when we’d rule out other conditions that can look similar, such as a cyst or mole.

Why Choose Aesthetics of Essex for Lipoma Removal

Aesthetics of Essex has been helping people feel more confident in their skin for years.

Our clinical team spans aestheticians and nurse prescribers through to GMC-registered surgeons, so whatever you come to us for, you’re in genuinely qualified hands. For something like lipoma removal, this matters: it’s a straightforward surgical procedure, but it’s still surgery, and it deserves a surgeon’s care rather than a quick fix.

Every consultation is free and no-obligation, and we’d always rather tell you honestly what to expect than talk you into anything. It’s part of why patients across all three of our clinics leave us five-star Google reviews.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is a lipoma?

A lipoma is a benign skin lesion, a non-cancerous lump made up of mature fat cells. It feels soft and slightly doughy, and if you press it gently, it will move a little under the skin. Lipomas are usually painless and can range from the size of a pea to several centimetres across. They most commonly appear on the back, shoulders, upper arms, neck and thighs, and can develop at any age, though they’re most common in adults between 40 and 60. They’re generally harmless, and having one doesn’t mean you need to have it removed unless it’s bothering you.

    Is lipoma removal painful?

The removal procedure shouldn’t be painful, as a local anaesthetic is used to numb the area, although you may feel a slight sting when it’s being injected. After the anaesthetic wears off, the area may feel tender for a few days. Any soreness can be eased with paracetamol.

Do I need to see a GP first?

No, you can self-refer for private lipoma removal at Aesthetics of Essex. However, if we spot anything during your consultation that we think should be examined by a doctor, we’ll let you know.

How much does lipoma removal cost?

At Aesthetics of Essex, prices for lipoma removal start at £550, which includes your consultation, the surgery itself, and aftercare to make sure the wound heals properly. For a bespoke quote for the removal of your lipoma or lipomas, you’ll need to join us for a consultation.

What aftercare is needed after lipoma removal?

After your removal procedure, your clinician will give you full aftercare guidance, which includes:
    • Keeping the area clean and dry for the first 48 hours
    • Not soaking the area for 7 to 10 days, including baths or swimming
    • Avoiding strenuous exercise for 3 to 4 weeks to reduce the risk of infection

Our clinicians are always on hand to answer any questions you have. Feel free to get in touch today.

Can more than one lipoma be removed at once?

Yes. Surgical lipoma removal is suitable for one lipoma or several, and we can often treat more than one in a single appointment. The exact approach depends on how many you have and where they are, so this is something we’ll agree together at your consultation.
