What Is Scar Reduction Treatment?

Scar management treatments at Aesthetics of Essex include:

Dermapen

Dermapen uses fine micro-needles to trigger your skin’s own healing response, encouraging new collagen that can soften scarring, discolouration and fine lines over a course of treatments.

CO₂

Our Genuine CO₂ Laser can help dramatically improve the appearance of acne scars, surgical scars and other textural scarring. By precisely resurfacing the skin and stimulating new collagen production, CO₂ laser helps to smooth uneven texture, soften scar edges and encourage healthier-looking skin.

IPL

IPL can help improve the appearance of red, pigmented and discoloured scars, targeting unwanted redness and pigmentation to create a more even-looking skin tone. With a course of treatments, scars can appear less noticeable, smoother and more blended with the surrounding skin.

Dermal Filler

Dermal filler adds volume beneath deeper scars, folds and creases, using Juvéderm® or Sculptra® depending on what suits your skin.

What To Expect During Your Appointment

  • Every scar reduction appointment starts with an honest look at your scar, its type, depth, age and cause – this way, your practitioner can recommend which treatment suits you best, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
  • A topical anaesthetic can be used if needed, and most scar treatments are completed within around half an hour.

What happens afterwards depends on the treatment. Mild redness, swelling or sensitivity in the treated area is normal for a day or two, and most people are back to their normal daily activities within 24 to 48 hours.

Keloid Scar
Benefit one

Matched to your scar

Our treatment options work differently, so your consultation is about finding the right fit for your scar's type and depth, not a single default treatment.

Benefit two

Options for surface and deeper scarring

From micro-needling to dermal filler, we can help with textural acne scarring as well as deeper folds and creases caused by scarring.

Benefit three

Encourages your own collagen

Dermapen and PlexR both work by encouraging your skin's natural collagen and elastin production, rather than masking the scar.

Benefit four

Fast, in-clinic appointments

Most scar treatments take around 30 minutes, with topical anaesthetic used where needed.

Why Choose Aesthetics of Essex for Scar Reduction Treatment

Scars vary – a shallow acne scar and a scar left by an injury don’t always respond to the same treatment, which is why we offer several options.

Your free consultation is about correctly identifying the scar type and then matching it to whichever treatment genuinely fits.

At Aesthetics of Essex, we treat scars alongside a much wider range of skin and cosmetic concerns, which means the same team keeping an eye on your scar can also flag anything else worth mentioning while you’re in the chair.

If keloid scarring is what’s bothering you specifically, we provide Keloid Scarring Removal.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is a scar?

A scar is a mark that is left on the skin after an injury or wound has healed. A scar forms when the thicker, inner layer of skin, called the dermis, receives damage. It’s important to remember that scars may never be able to be removed completely, but we can definitely help them to appear less visible.

Scar tissue is made from the same connective tissue as the rest of your skin, but it forms differently, with fewer blood vessels, which is part of why it can look and feel different from the skin around it.

One of the main types of scarring we see within the clinic is acne scarring. According to the British Skin Foundation, 28% of the UK population suffers from acne and 95% of acne sufferers say it impacts their daily lives. There are different types of acne scarring:

    • Macular Scars – darker patches of pigment on the skin where the acne formed
    • Box Scars – round scars with steep sides, caused by acne but resembling chickenpox
    • Rolling Scars – caused by damage underneath the skin; this type of scarring is wide and shallow
    • Ice Pick Scars – deep and narrow; this type of scar can resemble large open pores
Can a scar be completely removed?

Not usually, no, and we’d rather be upfront about that than promise something we can’t deliver.

What treatment can do is make a scar significantly less noticeable by smoothing its texture, softening its colour or helping it sit more level with the surrounding skin. How much improvement is realistic depends on the scar’s type, depth and age, which is exactly what your consultation is for.

How do I know which scar treatment in Essex is right for me?

It depends on the type of scar you have. Acne scarring, raised or hypertrophic scars, and depressed scars from an injury or surgery all respond differently to treatment. At your consultation, we’ll take a look at your scar and recommend the solution that suits you best.

    Does scar treatment hurt?

Most people don’t find scar treatment painful. A topical anaesthetic can be used, and any redness, itching or sensitivity afterwards is usually mild and settles within a day or two.

How many sessions will I need, and how long until I see results?

It depends on the treatment. We’ll talk through realistic timelines for your specific scar at your consultation.

Can scar treatment help with acne scars?

Yes, acne scarring is one of the most common reasons people come to see us for scar reduction treatment in Essex. Because acne scars vary between macular, box, rolling and ice pick types, the right approach depends on which you have – we’ll assess this at your free consultation.

Do I need to see a dermatologist instead?

If you’re unsure what’s causing a mark on your skin, or a scar looks unusual, it’s worth having it checked by your GP or a dermatologist first. Our clinicians treat confirmed scarring cosmetically, but we’re not a substitute for a medical diagnosis.
