What is Lip Filler Dissolving?

Essentially, an enzyme called hyaluronidase is injected into the lips, pretty much in the same way as the lip fillers themselves. The concentrated dose rapidly breaks down the hyaluronic acid in dermal filler formulas, which the body then naturally eliminates.

Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in your skin and lips, which is why hyaluronidase can break it down quickly and without affecting the surrounding tissue.

People choose to dissolve their lip filler for numerous reasons, including being unhappy with excessive volume or an unnatural appearance, or simply wanting their natural lips back.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

Your appointment starts with your consultation, where your nurse prescriber explains the procedure and carries out a patch test before any treatment begins. This is standard practice for hyaluronidase, since it’s the point where sensitivity to the enzyme would show.

A numbing cream can be applied beforehand, as lips are a very sensitive part of the face and, although lip dissolving isn’t entirely pain-free, most people find it comfortable. The injections themselves only take about 10 minutes, though you should allow longer for the appointment as a whole.

Afterwards, some swelling, bruising or tenderness at the injection site is normal. You should start to notice results within 24 to 48 hours, with the full effect visible after around two weeks, once any swelling has fully settled. If you’re planning to have your lips refilled, you’ll need to wait at least two weeks after dissolving before having them treated with dermal filler.
