What is PRP Hair Treatment?

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is a hair rejuvenation treatment that uses your own blood plasma to help:

  • increase hair growth and thickness in your hair count
  • help protect existing follicles from early shedding
  • increase blood supply to the follicle
  • boost hair density

PRP hair treatment is a non-surgical hair regrowth treatment that uses your own blood plasma to stimulate existing hair follicles for increased growth factors and treat thinning hair. So, if your hair is looking a little worse for wear, platelet-rich plasma injections can help restore your hair to a healthier, fuller state.

PRP can also help with:

  • Weakened hair strands that break or split
  • Thinning hair
  • Post-procedure hair rejuvenation
  • Lank or volume-free hair

If you’re also interested in PRP for skin rejuvenation, take a look at our Vampire Facial treatment, which uses the same technology on the face.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

During your PRP session, there are three key steps:

  • The qualified and experienced nurse will draw 10 to 60ml of blood, usually from your arm.
  • The blood is then spun to separate the platelet-rich plasma.
  • Finally, the platelet-rich plasma is injected into your scalp, in around 15 to 20 injections per session.

It’s recommended that you have three PRP sessions, spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart, for the best results.

Because blood is drawn as part of the treatment, it’s worth eating a meal beforehand and staying well hydrated. Let your practitioner know if you tend to feel dizzy or light-headed with blood draws, so they can make you as comfortable as possible.

PRP needles
Benefit one

Stimulates hair growth

This popular treatment encourages dormant hair follicles to regenerate and grow, and increases the diameter of hair shafts, resulting in thicker-looking hair.

Benefit two

100% natural

PRP hair restoration is a natural, non-surgical treatment that uses your own blood, minimising the risk of allergic reaction and making it one of the safest regenerative treatments available.

Benefit three

Helps with hair thinning and volume loss

PRP is a treatment option increasingly used for androgenetic alopecia (pattern thinning) and general hair thinning. We'll always talk you through whether it's the right fit for you at a free consultation.

Benefit four

Increased self-esteem

A fuller head of thicker hair can really help to boost confidence and self-image, which may have been impacted by thinning hair.

Why Choose Aesthetics of Essex for PRP Hair Treatment

Aesthetics of Essex has been helping people feel more confident in their skin since 2012, from clinics in Upminster, Rayleigh and Maldon. PRP hair treatment is carried out by our qualified, experienced nurses, using nothing but your own blood, so there’s no synthetic product involved and a lower risk of allergic reaction.

Starting any hair treatment tends to come with a fair few questions, so every PRP consultation is free and no-obligation. We’ll talk you through whether it’s genuinely likely to help your particular pattern of thinning before you commit to anything, rather than assuming everyone is a good candidate.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is PRP treatment the same as PRP therapy?

Platelet-rich plasma therapy has many names within the industry, all of which describe the same remedy. This includes:

    • Platelet-rich plasma therapy
    • PRP hair treatment
    • PRP scalp injections
    • PRP scalp treatments
    • PRP treatment
    • PRP therapy
    • Platelet-rich plasma injections

You should be aware, however, that advanced PRP treatment is not a like-for-like cosmetic solution, as it focuses on improving the aesthetics of the face, not the hair, and includes the use of hyaluronic acid alongside platelet-rich plasma.

Can you get platelet-rich plasma from another source?

The use of platelet-rich plasma is essential for PRP treatment because platelets contain cytokines and proteins that promote growth, healing and rejuvenation. When used in cosmetic treatments to correct hair thinning, injected PRP increases hair growth and gives existing hair follicles a boost.

When undergoing PRP therapy, it’s not encouraged to use platelet-rich plasma from another source or person, because of the risk of infection. For this reason, PRP will always be given back to the patient who donated it at the start of the appointment.

As it’s not needed for improving growth factors or hair density, the rest of the blood products, such as white and red blood cells, will be safely disposed of as medical waste.

Does PRP treatment really improve hair?

Unlike many of the hacks, tips and products you’ll find online, PRP is backed by a growing body of clinical research into its effect on hair growth, density and follicle health.

Studies that support this include a 2022 review from Drug Design, Development and Therapy (Dove Press), a 2020 review from the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, and a 2018 review from the International Journal of Women’s Dermatology.

This research is one of the reasons many of our patients choose PRP, though as with any treatment, individual results can vary.

To start your PRP treatment today, why not call us to book a hair rejuvenation appointment? We offer platelet-rich plasma therapy at any of our Upminster, Rayleigh or Maldon clinics.

Are there side effects to PRP therapy for hair restoration?

As with all cosmetic treatments, there is a risk of side effects from PRP therapy. These rare side effects can include:

    • Dizziness
    • Nausea
    • Scalp pain
    • Irritation during the healing process
    • Scar tissue at the injection site
    • Injury to blood vessels
    • Injury to nerves

Many of these consequences can occur from having blood drawn to harvest the plasma. So, to limit the likelihood of these after your treatment, you can:

    • Eat a healthy, balanced meal near your appointment time, for breakfast or lunch
    • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water
    • Tell our practitioners if you find it better to give blood in a particular position, to help avoid dizziness or nausea

If you want to know more, contact our expert practitioners. We have years of experience delivering PRP therapy to patients of all types, so there’s not likely to be a question we haven’t heard before.

What are hair follicles, and how do they help with hair growth?

A hair follicle is like a pore and is found within the top two layers of skin. Each follicle surrounds a hair root and strand, and there are around 1 million of them on your head alone.

One of the main jobs of hair follicles is to grow individual hair strands, and over your lifetime, the hair follicle can start and stop functioning at any time.

Lifeless, thin hair is a common side effect of damaged or degenerating hair follicles, while improved hair density and hair thickness come from a well-performing, healthy follicle.

Injecting PRP into the scalp, as part of PRP therapy, encourages hair follicle health and regeneration, helping to stimulate hair health and happiness.

For an initial consultation for PRP hair treatment in Essex, don’t hesitate to contact us, and we’ll book you in.

What does PRP treatment for hair cost?

At Aesthetics of Essex, a single PRP therapy session costs £250. For patients looking for a discount, three PRP hair treatment sessions cost £695, saving you over £50. See our full price list for our other treatments.

How long do PRP treatment results last?

Hair growth results can last 12 to 24 months post-treatment, but some patients may need regular maintenance treatments every 6 to 12 months to preserve the desired results. Ask our practitioner for more details at your consultation.
