What is PicoSure skin rejuvenation treatment?

PicoSure laser treatment uses very short, high-energy pulses of light rather than the heat-based approach older laser treatments rely on. Each pulse creates a photomechanical effect in the skin, known as PressureWave. This encourages the production of new collagen and elastin and allows deeper penetration into the dermis beneath the skin.

What to expect at your appointment

During your first session, there are a few key steps:

  • A numbing cream may be applied beforehand to keep the session comfortable, depending on the area.
  • The laser passes over the treatment area in short pulses, breaking down pigment and stimulating collagen without heating the surrounding skin.

    What's the difference between PicoSure laser treatment and traditional laser resurfacing treatment?

    Traditional laser skin resurfacing treatments use photothermal action (heat).

    PicoSure, on the other hand, uses ultra-short pulses to create a photomechanical effect, known as PressureWave, that creates shockwaves in the dermis. This encourages the production of new collagen and elastin without damaging the skin.

    How many sessions do I need?

    Most people see the best results from a course of around 2-6 sessions, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. If you have more persistent concerns such as melasma or deeper acne scarring, you may need additional sessions.

    How long do PicoSure laser rejuvenation results last?

    PicoSure is an effective treatment with long-lasting results. Once spots clear, they don’t tend to return on their own. Texture and fine line improvements may fade gradually as your skin ages, which is why we recommend maintenance sessions every 3-6 months.

    Is there any aftercare needed?

    During recovery time, it’s important to do the following:

    • Avoid direct sun exposure as UV exposure can impact results
    • Apply sun protection daily – SPF 30 or higher
    • Stay hydrated by drinking water and applying a gentle moisturiser
    • Avoid skincare acids, body scrubs and retinoids

    Doing the above helps to ensure a successful healing process and expected results after treatment.

    Am I suitable for PicoSure laser rejuvenation?

    Most skin types are suitable for treatment, although we would advise against it if you have:

    • Active skin infections, such as eczema, cold sores and psoriasis
    • Have had recent sun exposure
    • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
    • Are taking photosensitising medications
