4 Types of Skin Acne & Ways To Treat Them

There is nothing more annoying than waking up to a huge spot that has made a sudden, unwelcomed appearance on your face or body – especially after perfecting your skin care regime on a goal to complexion perfection.

If you are lucky enough, the spot inflammation will disappear within a few hours while the rest of us search the web for alternative ways of treating spots; home remedies, spot creams; conceal it with make-up before attending an important interview or evening dinner date.

Some would suggest that one spot is the result of a high-sugar diet, or possibly a hormone imbalance causing extra sebum to clog your pores. They may even say it could even be due to bacteria and dead skin cells left on your pillow, however these are all common myths about causes of spots.

The difference between spots and Acne

The truth is, there is no difference between them. There is, however, a difference between the types of spots that form:

– Blackheads – small, blocked pores
– Whiteheads – small, hard bumps with a white centre
– Pustules – spots with a lot of pus visible
– Nodules – hard, painful lumps under the skin
“Acne” is a medical term used by doctors and dermatologists to describe a skin condition caused by hormone levels in men and women. Swollen, painful red spots are known as inflammatory acne.

Many of us experience acne spots during puberty due to raised levels of Testosterone (male hormone) that causes excessive sebum production. Excess sebum blocks pores and prevents skin cells from shedding, trapping dead cells and bacteria beneath – forming spots.

Treatments for Acne
It is not recommended that you pop pimples as this can lead to further bacterial infection or scarring. You can reduce inflammation and redness by applying ice to the spot for a few minutes.

Acne should clear by itself over a period of time, however severe acne could take weeks (or even months) for your skin to clear without the help of prescription lotions, topical antibiotics and medicines.

If you are looking to speed up the process and clear your complexion, we highly recommend you book a free consultation with our skin care specialist for a skin analysis. This enables us to determine which acne treatment is best suited to you and your condition.
