Not everyone is blessed with thickly, long, glowing hair, for whatever the reason may be – whether it is genetic, bacterial or self induced; there is no need to feel ashamed or embarrassed as it can occur in anybody, no matter what age or gender. As many as 50% of men will experience some degree of baldness by the time they reach 50 and for many the effects can occur whilst they are in their 20s or 30s. Up to 50% of women will get some form of baldness by the age of 65 and around 1 in 4 will experience hair thinning to some extent.
Baldness or thinning does not appeal to many people because it may pose a serious threat to your look and personality; it may also cause some form of social and psychological distress to those who have it. However, thanks to modern medical techniques it is possible to undergo surgery to undo the effects and give you your hair back. The most popular treatments are known as Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). These hair transplantation treatments can help you let your hair down and stop the worrying. A lot of people lose their confidence because of excessive hair loss and as a result, their personal and professional lives suffer, but hair surgery can help you roll back the years and give you the appearance that you desire.
What Is A Hair Transplant?
A Hair Transplant is a cosmetic surgical procedure that attempts to permanently re-establish healthy growing hairs in areas where hair is sparse or has completely gone. Often used to tackle male pattern baldness, it can also be used to restore hair lost due to scaring and isn’t limited to the head – it can be used to restore the beard area as well as the eyebrows.
Both FUT and FUE treatments can be done under local anaesthesia for a painless procedure; however patients will typically experience some form of soreness and numbness after the surgery. Due to the size of the incisions made during the procedure, healing is very quick with most patients feeling fine a day or two after the operation and the most amazing thing about it is that a patient would not need to have this procedure multiple times as the results last for a lifetime.
The Two Types of Treatments Explained
Follicular Unit Transplant is a hair restoration procedure where a patient’s hair is transplanted from the natural donor area, in naturally occurring groups of 1 to 4 hairs, called follicular units. Follicular units also contain sebaceous (oil) glands, nerves, a small muscle, and occasional fine vellus hairs. The results of this procedure mimic the way hair grows naturally to give you an undetectable transplant!
For Follicular Unit Extraction, individual follicular units are extracted directly from the patient’s donor area, ideally one at a time. These follicular units are then grafted into tiny micro incisions in the bald area in a pattern that mimics natural hair. The advantage of this treatment is that it leaves no linear scar where the hair was extracted!
