Dermal Filler and COVID-19 Vaccine

It’s possible that you’ve read about patients developing puffiness or swelling where their dermal filler was placed for a short time following their COVID-19 vaccine.

After headlines linking COVID-19 vaccines to dermal filler caused some initial concern in the beauty world, it’s understandable that you might be feeling worried.  The resounding message from doctors is that the risk is extremely rare, and it’s important to get your vaccine.

To allay any concerns you have, we’ve provided information about what reactions to dermal filler after vaccinations usually look like.  We’ve also covered how unlikely it is to occur, and how easily you can treat it if it does happen.

What is a delayed hypersensitivity reaction?

This temporary swelling is known as a delayed hypersensitivity reaction and you can treat it easily at home.  It can happen very rarely with anybody who has had dermal filler treatment.  Anything that triggers the immune system can cause it, from infections to vaccinations.

The idea of a vaccine is to trigger an immune response to provide protection from a virus. The immune response puts your body on high alert for any foreign material.  In extremely rare cases, this may include dermal fillers. This sometimes causes mild, temporary swelling to the area where we have injected the filler

With the government rolling out the COVID-19 vaccine at such a fast pace, there will inevitably be more people experiencing a delayed hypersensitivity reaction.  However, the incidence of this happening is extremely low (as little as one patient in 10,000).  And it’s really nothing to worry about if it does happen. You can easily treat it at home with antipyretic medication such as aspirin or ibuprofen.

Can I have dermal filler if I’ve booked my COVID vaccine?

As a clinic, we have taken the advice of our regulatory authority.  Therefore, we advise that you should not have dermal filler in the two weeks before your vaccination.  You should also avoid it for four weeks after your vaccination.

It is so important that as many people are vaccinated against COVID-19 as possible, so please don’t be put off from having the vaccine.

Any reactions to dermal filler are usually self-limiting, and nothing to be concerned about. However, if you are worried, please don’t hesitate to contact us.  We will be more than happy to discuss your concerns.

What kind of dermal filler injections do Aesthetics of Essex use?

Aesthetics of Essex most commonly use Juvaderm®, one of the most popular dermal filler treatments for scarring, wrinkles, and creases of varying severity.  Common treatment areas include the lower face, especially around the mouth and the creases from the nose to mouth.

Dermal filler is made of Hyaluronic Acid.  As this is the body’s own natural skin plumper, it has an almost non-existent risk of an allergic reaction. This also means that your immune system is less likely to see it as a foreign body.  Therefore, it’s very uncommon to have a delayed hypersensitivity reaction after your COVID vaccine.

Our dermal filler injectors have years of experience in the industry, so you’re guaranteed to be thrilled with the results.
