How does Sculptra® treatment work?
Made of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), Sculptra® is injected under the skin to create a fuller and smoother look.
This, in turn, fills in fine lines and deeper, more extensive wrinkles – helping to turn back the hands of time and give a plumper, youthful appearance.
PLLA is chosen as it is a collagen stimulator. After the acid is absorbed into the body a few days after treatment, it encourages fibroblast skin cells to produce more collagen – a protein that offers strength, support, and boosted structure.
This then restores lost facial fat which helps to shape the face and offers gradual results that can last for up to 2 years after 2-3 treatments!

PLLA-based cosmetic dermal fillers are ideal for those looking to:

Benefits of Sculptra® injections
- It’s biocompatible
Anything designed to be used in the body, from fillers to joint replacements, should be biocompatible.
This means they are well-tolerated by the body, won’t likely cause a reaction, and have minimal side effects. Of course, this can differ from person to person, but biocompatibility generally offers some level of certainty for prospective patients.
- It can be used all over the body
Ageing can bring side effects to many more parts of the body than the face and Sculptra® can offer assistance with the following:
Face – cheeks, nasolabial folds, and the jawline
Body – the neck, décolletage, chest, hips (to remove hip dips), buttocks, and knees
Hands – add volume and make veins/tendons less visible
Abdomen – tightening loose belly skin
- Results are gradual and long-lasting
Unlike other treatments which offer results straight away but fade quicker, Sculptra® lasts much longer after a full course of treatment, making it more cost-effective, too!
- You shouldn’t feel any pain
Even if you are nervous about needles, our experienced team will help to set your mind at ease and use a numbing anaesthetic, so you’ll only feel pressure instead of pain.
Sculptra® filler recovery
After Sculptra® treatment, there may be some minor physical symptoms, such as slight swelling, tenderness, redness, and very light bruising. However, you should be fine to go back to work.
To help reduce symptoms and make results more effective, you should:
– Avoid exercise and other strenuous activities for at least 24 hours
– Skip massaging or rubbing the treatment areas for 2-3 days
– Stay away from excessive heat or UV exposure
– Choose alcohol-free alternatives for 48 hours
– Reschedule vaccines, surgery, tattoos, or permanent makeup for 4 weeks after treatment
– Use ice packs for short periods (around 10 minutes at a time) to help with discomfort and swelling
After a couple of days, you should also remember 5-5-5!
This involves gently massaging the injected area for 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for 5 days in a row to ensure the filler is well distributed and even.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can anyone get Sculptra® fillers?
Though biocompatible and considered safe, there is a small proportion of people who should avoid Sculptra® treatment, including those who:
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have a known allergy to any of the ingredients in Sculptra
- Have an active skin infection, inflammation, pimples, rashes, hives, or cysts
- Have a history or known risk of keloid formation or hypertrophic scarring
- Have autoimmune diseases
Likewise, Sculptra® is also not recommended for use on the eyes or lips so if you would like treatment in these areas, we may recommend another filler.

- Maldon – info@aestheticsofmaldon.co.uk
Should I tell you about my allergies at my consultation?
During your consultation, a member of our team will chat with you about your health and the treatment you are interested in to make sure you are eligible.
This includes your:
- Overall health and any allergies
- Goals for the Sculptra® injections
- Current medications, vitamins, or supplements you take – in case of possible interactions
- History of similar cosmetic procedures
Hiding information from your clinician in the worst instances can result in side effects and health risks – so it’s really not worth it to access Sculptra® treatment.
This is especially true as there are many filler types available that you could be more suitable for.
Book your Sculptra® consultation today or chat with us on our webchat to find out more.
Is Sculptra® treatment invasive?
Considered minimally invasive by the cosmetic industry, Sculptra® relies on practitioners using a 26 G needle.
A 26 G needle is very fine, with an outer diameter of 0.47mm – less than half a millimetre. Given the fact there are 10mm in each centimetre, that is very fine indeed.
Likewise, the 26 G need is also regarded as shorter than others which limits its uses but makes it ideal for cosmetic treatments like Sculptra® filler.
If you want to know more about the needles used, feel free to speak to your clinician at your consultation or fill in our contact form and someone will be in touch!
