Do you have lumps and bumps under the skin that are causing emotional discomfort?

What are lipomas?
Lipomas are non-cancerous, benign skin tumours that are made of fat cells.
Found below the skin, they can vary in size from the size of a pea up to several centimetres across, and are commonly found on the:
- Trunk and back
- Arms and shoulders
- Neck
- Thighs
Unless very large lipomas grow in a sensitive area or press on the nerves, they aren’t normally guilty of causing pain.
This fatty tissue is harmless and can occur for any number of reasons, including:
- As part of an inherited condition – some people have a condition called Familial Multiple Lipomatosis (MFL), which can lead to the development of multiple lipomas.
- Have other conditions that increase their likelihood – including Dercum’s Disease and Gardner Syndrome
- Being middle-aged or older – as you age, lipomas become more likely.
Is lipoma removal surgery necessary?
Made of fat cells and considered completely harmless, not everyone with a lipoma or multiple lipomas opts for removal. You don’t have to, and can live perfectly happily if you decide on an alternative lipomas treatment.
However, if the collection of fatty tissue is ruining the appearance of your soft tissue, a minor surgical procedure can be used to get your lipoma removed in as little as an hour.
If lipomas are getting you down, we carry out lipoma removal surgery at our Westlands Medical Centre in Hornchurch, Essex, at Aesthetics of Essex.
Lipoma surgery - what to expect
After checking the area, for example, with an MRI scan or physical examination, the surgical procedure to remove lipomas can begin.
- Anaesthesia – a local anaesthetic is injected around the fibrous tissue to numb the area and ensure you feel no pain.
- Incision – a small cut is made in the skin directly over the lipoma.
- Lipoma removal – the provider removes the lipoma from the surrounding tissues.
- Closure – the incision is closed with dissolvable or standard stitches.
- Dressing – a dressing is applied to protect the wound.
Aftercare is thoroughly explained to you and will be based on the location of your lipoma removal, the size of the lipoma, and the type of stitches used to close the wound.
Before we start, our experienced and professional team will talk you through it from start to finish, so you know exactly what to expect and feel comfortable.
