Reasons for Kenalog Injection:
Hay fever is a common condition caused by your immune system reacting to pollens. This reaction can cause significant fatigue and problems with concentration and alertness, affecting your daily life. Kenalog injections are used to treat severe hay fever when all other medication both over the counter and prescribed have been exhausted and proven unsuccessful. Kenalog injections contain Triamcinolone acetonide 40mg/1ml, a corticosteroid that reduces the body’s inflammatory and allergic response.
Procedure:
Kenalog is injected into the buttock muscle and takes only a few seconds. Although not very painful, the injection can cause side effects.
Potential Benefits:
Kenalog injections relieve hay fever symptoms temporarily. For some, the relief lasts the whole season. Occasionally, a second dose may be needed. More than 80mg (2 injections) per season is not recommended except in exceptional circumstances.
Kenalog injections can cause an extensive list of potential unwanted side effects: –
Raised Blood Pressure, Headaches, Infections, Dizziness, Water retention, Pain, Skin Rashes, Muscle Weakness, Swelling, Breathing difficulties , Abdominal pain, Insomnia, Taste Disturbance, Mental health problems such as depression and mood Swings. Kenalog can cause skin colour changes and or dimpling / pitting of the skin caused by loss of fat tissue under the skin at the injection site. This can cause a permanent loss of tissue at the injection site.
Kenalog can also increase your risk to infection including viral illness ‘s such as Flu , Chicken Pox and Shingles
It can also induce osteoporosis brittle / breaking bones and a reduction in the body’s ability to respond to significant stress from serious injuries.
Serious Possible Adverse Effects:
Very rarely, anaphylactic allergic reactions can occur, immediately after administration of the injection. If this occurs you will be immediately administered an emergency injection of adrenaline. Due to the emergency of this treatment, you will not have time to consent so this is included within this consent form.
Following injection, you can also experience swelling of the face, lips, or throat, breathing difficulties, skin itching, redness, rash, sticky black stools, severe abdominal pain, or vomiting blood. If this occurs you must seek advice immediately.
After administered of the injection nothing can be done to prevent it spreading through the body even if you experience undesirable side effects.
Repeated steroid injections for Hay Fever can cause bones loss, -Osteoporosis and broken bones.
Just how high this risk is with 1 yearly injection is not fully researched or understood.
Given the above, Kenalog injections for Hay Fever is only suitable for a small group of people as steroid injection and exacerbate existing medical conditions . Hence the primary treatment for hay fever is oral antihistamines, allergy eye drops and steroid nasal sprays.
