Ear Wax Removal Essex

    Ear Wax Removal Essex

Also known as ear irrigation, ear wax removal Essex is a procedure used to remove excess ear wax from the ear.

This technique is often used to remove wet or very soft wax that has collected on the eardrum, as it can be painful, lead to hearing loss, or even block the ear canal.

So, are you a good candidate for ear syringing?

Signs you need Ear Wax Removal Essex

Some common signs of needing ear wax removal include:

    • Dark ear wax
    • A blocked feeling
    • Hearing loss
    • Ear pain
    • Ringing or noises in the ear – also called Tinnitus
    • Dizziness
    • A cough
    • Itchiness in the ear canal
    • Infection and/or odour in the ears

If you notice any of these signs and symptoms, coming in for wax removal can make you much more comfortable and vastly increase your quality of life.

What do I need to do before I come in for ear wax removal Essex?

Before we can start ear irrigation, there are a few small tasks you must complete beforehand. These initial steps are essential for ensuring that you are a suitable candidate and have successful ear wax elimination.

    See your GP

To remove ear wax safely, you must see a GP before you come to us if you have or have had any of the following symptoms:

    • Pain within the last 90 days
    • Middle ear infections within the last 90 days
    • Current or recurrent ear infection
    • You’ve had any past operations in or around the ear
    • If you suspect you have any foreign bodies in the ear canal
    • If you think you have a perforated eardrum
    • Any fluid or discharge from inside your ear within the last 90 days

As a medical professional, your GP can advise if you have any specific health concerns that mean you are not suitable for ear syringing.

Although our warm and friendly staff are well trained in ear wax removal, we are not qualified to make decisions that can impact your health – so you need to enlist a doctor to do this.

    Soften the ear wax

If you’re not sure if you have sufficient wax in your ears, don’t worry, we can take a look for you during your consultation. This will allow us to be sure that you need wax removal and also gives us chance to give you your ear drops, which will ensure the hard, uncomfortable build-up has turned into softened wax.

Your ear drops will work as a wax softener and are made from olive oil. It’s important that the wax has been softened to make it a comfortable, safe, and effective method of ear cleaning that does not harm the delicate inner workings of the ear canal or eardrum.

To properly prepare for your appointment, we’d recommend using your olive oil ear drops for 7 – 10 days. At first, it can feel a little strange and you might worry that your blocked ears are worse, but try not to worry because this is just the wax soaking up the oil. As you continue, the strange sensation and potential loss of hearing should lessen significantly and you might even feel the congested or blocked feeling lifting slightly.

The use of olive oil for wax softening is perfectly safe but there are sometimes rare cases of patients who find they need to use a different method of ear wax removal because it doesn’t agree with them. This includes:

    • If you wear hearing aids – Avoid replacing your hearing aids after you put olive oil in your ears as you could damage them.
    • If you experience a foul taste after using olive oil – This might be a sign that there is a hole in your eardrum, so if this happens, stop using the olive oil and get in touch with your GP.
    • If the olive oil causes any discomfort or irritation – Using olive oil should be painless, so if you have any doubts or concerns, stop the drops and give us a call or speak to your GP or pharmacist.

After 7-10 days of use, the oil should have changed the consistency of the wax enough for us to complete the wax removal.

What to expect from the Ear Wax Removal Essex process

Once your drop preparation is complete, you will now join us for your ear wax removal treatment, which safely and gently ensures wax removal without the use of harmful tools like cotton buds.

Firstly, a member of our trained and experienced team will talk you through the process, answer any questions, and examine your ears using an otoscope – a special light designed to help improve the view of the ear canal and eardrum.

Then you will be given a cape of towel to drape over your top or jacket, to stop you getting wet, while they fill the irrigation machine with warm water.

During treatment, we will place a small tube just inside the ear, allowing the warmed water to gently dislodge and clear the ear wax inside. This water and wax will then run out of the ear, into a small cup or bowl that is held beneath.

Once the procedure is complete, we will give you tissues to dry your ear and advise you if you need to come in for another ear wax removal appointment – as it may take more than one attempt to remove your problematic wax fully.

    Does ear syringing hurt?

No – it may feel slightly odd and you could notice some mild discomfort as the warm water washes around your ear but you shouldn’t feel any pain.

Some patients can also feel a little dizzy as the wax dislodges, but you are seated safely and this will pass quickly.

If you are worried about ear wax removal, please contact our team to find out more and ask any questions.

Is ear syringing a one-off treatment?

Each patient is different, so depending on how much wax is in your ear, it is usually possible to successfully remove the excess ear wax in one session.

However, if you are suffering from particularly blocked ears, you may need to come back a second time so we can fully clear the ear canal.

Can I have the treatment on the same day as consultation?

For this method of ear wax removal, we need you to use the oil drops for 7-10 days to properly soften the wax. Not only does this make it easier to remove, but it can make the process much more comfortable.

After your oil drops, we will then have you come back in for ear wax removal in a short, safe session that will make a noticeable difference to how you feel as well as successfully resolve any hearing complaints.

How long does ear syringing take?

Our wax removal treatment comes in two parts, a consultation and the treatment itself.

Consultations take around 15 – 20 minutes and end with us giving you your oil drops if you are a suitable candidate for ear wax removal.

The treatment will then follow 7-10 days later, for a maximum of 30 minutes.

To start the ear wax removal process, why not call us to book a consultation? We offer ear syringing treatment at any of our Upminster, Rayleigh, or Maldon clinics.
